'Connect the Parks' Needs Your Help - Monday May 18th 4:00pm - State Public Meeting on Waterfront Park

The Jersey City Waterfront Parks Conservancy has asked the HPHA to forward the following information to our members.

************************
The State has scheduled a meeting (see below) to communicate their plan to develop a portion of the waterfront walkway that is in desperate need of renovation & protection. This meeting will test the community's interest a connected world class waterfront park for Jersey City. Connected not only in design, but physically with a bridge (see concept attached) This park can rival the quality of those found along the waterfront in Manhattan. We need our supporters, and the family and friends of our supporters, to attend this meeting to ensure the State hears the voice of the community of Jersey City.

The Connect the Parks design concept was based on your input and was funded entirely from your donations. So please do what you can to attending the meeting below. If you can't attend for what ever reason, please ask a friend or a retired neighbor to attend on your behalf. These are your tax dollars at work and it's an important step towards getting a world class park on the waterfront for the residents of Jersey City.

Friday 5/15, testing of the new County- Wide Alert Notification System

A heads-up to members and neighbors:

Friday, May 15, 9AM - 4PM, there will be a testing of the new County- Wide Alert Notification System, which is designed to alert residents in the event of an emergency.

The plan is for a series of audible tones in 12 Hudson County areas--emitted via 31 alert notification units that have been mounted atop poles and roofs--1 distinct tone for each geographic area, w/ some locations hearing a tone more than once because some parts of, i.e., Secaucus may depend on units located in JC and North Bergen.

The system does allow for live voice instructions following the initial audible tone alerts; verbal instructions are especially important along commercial corridors & in transportation hubs. Plus, in the future, the plan is for residents to be able to tune to an AM channel, as well as receive info via broadcast.

In the months to come there will be ongoing silent testing of this ANS, but next Fri is slated for the audible tone. You need do nothing. This is supposed to be part of planned preparedness testing of a county-wide system, which is a system that can be activated in the event of a national hazard or man-made disaster.

Light Rail Work this Weekend

The HPHA would like to alert members and neighbors to Light Rail work on weekends starting this weekend. Following is a message from our contacts at the Light Rail:

Hudson Bergen will be performing a rail replacement project for the curve at Essex Street and Van Vorst (between Van Vorst and Marin Blvd). This work should help to reduce the amount of noise made as trains operate through the curve. This work is exactly like the work we did last spring at Essex and Hudson.

The work is schedule to be performed over 6 weekends (Saturdays and Sundays). The first two weekends we will be removing the concrete from around the rails. And the four following weekends we will replace the actual rails and replace the concrete around the rails.
The work will start at 7:00am each day, beginning with a worker brief of the job to be completed and identifying all of the safety procedures, followed by setting up all of the safety equipment and work begins with the use of hand tools. At 8:15 we will begin utilizing mechanized tools. Work should be concluded by 6:00pm each day.

Due to changes in our contractors availability and earlier than expect material deliveries the work will begin on Saturday, May 8th. There will be no work scheduled for weekend of Memorial Day.
