JERSEY CITY, NJ, 7/16/2007 10:07:03 PM - United Water received official notification from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection to lift the boil water advisory for residents in the City of Hoboken and the Newport section of Jersey City. The boil water advisory had been in effect since about 5 p.m. Saturday when a contractor accidentally ruptured a 36-inch water main that was installed in 1924.
Laboratory results showed that the water remained safe at all times while the advisory was in effect. Customers were advised to boil water as a precautionary measure while United Water emergency crews repaired the water main, restored water service and collected water samples from throughout the affected areas and finished conducting water quality tests on those samples. Those results were provided to the NJDEP earlier this evening.
"This main break has been a major inconvenience for residents in Hoboken and Jersey City," said Jim Glozzy, vice president and general manager of United Water. "We owe these residents a sincere thank you for their patience and understanding during this emergency. We also owe a debt of gratitude to the hard work and effort of the Jersey City MUA, the Jersey City Office of Emergency Management and the Jersey City and Hoboken police and fire departments for their assistance."
According to Glozzy, now that the company has restored full service back to all residents, officials will begin to investigate circumstances that led to a contractor working on a demolition project accidentally striking the 36-inch water main on Coles Street in Jersey City on Saturday causing widespread low water pressure and, in some areas, water outages throughout the City of Hoboken and the Newport section of Jersey City.
